Roosevelt Institute Announces Rohit Chopra as Visiting Fellow

Chopra is Leading Voice on Economic Challenges Facing Young People

NEW YORK, NY – The Roosevelt Institute, a progressive think tank committed to forwarding the legacy of Eleanor and Franklin Roosevelt in the 21st century, has announced Rohit Chopra will be joining as a Visiting Fellow.

Chopra is widely recognized as a leading expert on America’s broken student loan system. He joins the Roosevelt Institute after a distinguished service in government. In 2010, he joined the Department of the Treasury as part of a small team led by Elizabeth Warren to launch the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. From 2011 to 2015, he served as Assistant Director of the CFPB, leading the agency’s work on students and young consumers. He was also appointed by the Treasury Secretary to serve as the CFPB’s student loan ombudsman, a new position established in the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act.

During his tenure, the agency enacted reforms to the student loan industry and recovered hundreds of millions of dollars in refunds for student loan borrowers. He subsequently served as Special Adviser to the Secretary of Education. He is also a Senior Fellow at the Consumer Federation of America.

“I saw close up how Washington is working well for those who already well-off, rather than for young people who play by the rules,” Chopra said. “The Roosevelt Institute has emerged as a hub for how to rewrite the rules of our economy. I’m excited to join Roosevelt’s growing group of thinkers and reformers.”

The Roosevelt Institute is also home to the Roosevelt network, a coalition of undergraduate students at more than 130 campuses across the country committed to engaging young people with the policy-making process. With the release of its 2015 report “Rewriting the Rules of the American Economy,” the Roosevelt Institute cemented its reputation as a cutting edge ideas shop for progressives focused on building an economy that works for all Americans. It has also released research on topics including racial inequality, corporate power, the economic distortions caused by monopolies, trade policy, infrastructure and the tax code.
