Network 2017-18 Year in Review

Network 2017-18 Year in Review

by Roosevelt Network / Wednesday, 27 June 2018 / Published in Projects, Roosevelt @

Operating in an era defined by dysfunction and chaos, the consolidation of power among the wealthiest among us, increased privatization of key public goods, the rollback of social safety net policies, and the criminalization of the most vulnerable among us– Roosevelters have continued to relentlessly pursue our mission to change who writes the rules for our communities, working to transform government to be reflective of, and responsive to, who it is truly meant to serve.

Over the past year, our members have worked in alongside partner organizations in their communities to defend key public goods – from fighting privatization and outsourcing in the University of Tennessee system, to defending the MAP grants in Illinois, building democratic solutions to food insecurity in Binghamton, and combating the digital divide in rural North Carolina – Roosevelters push for a more equitable future where rules are written by many for the good of all.

Engaging Elected Officials

This year, over 200 Roosevelters across 6 states lobbied for their ideas at the state and local level to elected officials. Students in New York met with officials on criminal discovery law and voter reform, students in Virginia advocated for their ideas to expand access to education and voter protection, and students in Massachusetts lobbied for carbon pricing.

Fight for the Re:Public

Following the launch of the Re:Public project in 2017, Roosevelters continued to fight to protect our public goods, and stood up against corporate actors attempting to privatize some of our most critical resources. Read more about the Re:Public project here.

10 years of 10 Ideas

This year marked the 10th anniversary of 10 Ideas, our annual journal of student-written progressive policy proposals. Over the last decade, this journal has elevated the ideas of young people from across the country who are seeking not only rewrite the rules, but fundamentally shift who gets to write them. This year’s journal had record high number of authors published, from diverse backgrounds and institutions. Read the report here.

Emerging Fellows

Our 2017-18 Emerging Fellows, Eamon Ross and Vishnu Ramachandran, looked to protect our public goods, both past and present. Eamon seeks to solve for food insecurity in Binghamton, NY’s Northside food desert through the introduction of a food co-op – opening more opportunity for jobs, community investment, and a stable source of nutritional food. Vishnu makes the case for increased smart infrastructure and broadband access in rural North Carolina, so as to lessen the digital divide, especially as the state prepares to further automate its transportation industry. Check out their full reports here.

Financialization of Higher Education

A year into our Financialization of Higher Education project has yielded important findings about the way Wall Street has been able to exercise its influence on college campuses – often advancing their own financial priorities at the cost of students, faculty, and campus workers. In April, Roosevelters from Michigan State University, in collaboration with Aman Banerji and Adem Sengal, released a report detailing how the decline in state funding has impacted their institution, calling for greater accountability and transparency around institutional spending priorities. Read the report here, and visit our Financialization of Higher Education webpage for more information.

Healthcare

This year, students across the country fought for a host of issues to ensure that people receive the care they need in order to live full, healthy lives. Cara Schiavone of Roosevelt @ GWU researched and authored a report on the affordability of health insurance for students on her campus, which resulted in the school implementing measures to reduce the cost of student health insurance and health policies. Read Cara’s report here.

Students at Roosevelt @ George Mason and Roosevelt @ NYU also fought for reproductive justice on their campuses, and at Roosevelt @ Connecticut College, Emma Horst-Martz successfully piloted a project for free feminine hygiene products on her campus in 2016, which was adopted as a permanent policy this year.

Economy

In 2016, Roosevelt @ University of Tennessee Knoxville partnered with other on-campus groups to oppose Governor Bill Haslam’s proposal to outsource all facilities management of state-owned buildings – including hospitals, prisons, and state parks. This year, they won their campaign, after much advocacy and on-the-ground advocacy, with a formal rejection of the privatization plan by their school chancellor. Read more about UTK’s path to fighting privatization here. At Roosevelt @ University of Michigan, students began working on an initiative to develop more affordable housing options in the city of Ann Arbor through more sustainable funding sources – read their 10 Ideas submission here.

Education

From creating systems to hold charter schools accountable in Michigan, to advocating for free SAT testing days in Virginia, and creating open-source textbook programs in Massachusetts, Roosevelters sought to make public education more equitable and accessible for all across the country.

Democratic Access

Roosevelters nationwide worked hard this year to protect and expand the platform for our voices to be heard as we not only rewrite the rules, but fundamentally change who is writing them. Students at the Roosevelt @ University of Michigan and Roosevelt @ George Mason University lobbied to lower the voting age to involve younger citizens in the process in their respective states. Students from 7 chapters across the New York Region also gathered together to lobby for Let NY Vote, advocating for an agenda that includes automatic voter registration, early voting, flexibility to change parties, pre-registration for 16 and 17-year olds, as well as voting for people on parole.

Human Rights

In a political moment where basic human rights in the U.S. are being threatened, Roosevelters sought to protect our communities. Roosevelt @ Amherst College have worked tirelessly to create a more accessible campus and college experience for students with disabilities, whilst Roosevelt @ Columbia partnered with the Correctional Association of NY to end solitary confinement through the HALT Act.

Energy & Environment

Roosevelters nationwide sought to protect and invest in our natural environments, so that they can continue to provide for generations to come. Students successfully got commitments to protect the environments in their communities, with Roosevelt @ Connecticut College passing a resolution addressing climate change in the City of New London, Roosevelt @ Columbia passing a referendum on carbon neutrality for their campus, and Roosevelt @ Northeastern lobbying for carbon pricing in Massachusetts.
