“Defunding the Corporation for Public Broadcasting amid rising corruption reflects a broader effort by the Trump administration to dismantle any institutions that might hold it accountable.”

New York, NY – Bilal Baydoun, director of democratic institutions at the Roosevelt Institute, released the following statement in response to the Senate’s decision, and a likely House vote, to eliminate funding for National Public Radio (NPR), the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), and local public media stations across the US:

“Public media connects communities, holds power to account, and helps keep democracy alive at all levels. Defunding the Corporation for Public Broadcasting amid rising corruption reflects a broader effort by this administration to dismantle any institutions that might hold it accountable. While billionaire-owned platforms serve the interests of their owners and flood the public with misinformation, Congressional Republicans are cutting off a vital source of information that local and rural communities rely on.”
