Roosevelt Must-Reads: I Want to Get Off This Ride, Please

September 17, 2019

Each Saturday, a Roosevelt staff member will share 3-5 articles that they consider must-reads.

With every week in America comes another wild news cycle of near ludicrous proportions. Our political reality seems ever more preposterous as demonstrated by Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross’s threat to fire employees of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration for being right when Trump was wrong. Then, there was the abrupt cancellation of peace negotiations with the Taliban at Camp David, an event that would have seen the US government hosting the Taliban during the 18th anniversary of 9/11. From Sharpiegate to the firing of Trump’s third National Security Advisor, the chaos and dysfunction of the Trump administration is overwhelming and limits our ability to process events; a point that Susan Glasser brilliantly penned in her piece on the end of the NSA as we know it.

Fortunately, not all news is bad news. My spirits were lifted by California reshaping their labor laws, so that workers get their fair share in a service economy.
