New York, NY—The Roosevelt Institute is proud to announce that Anna Gifty Opoku-Agyeman will join as its newest graduate fellow. As part of Roosevelt’s growing macroeconomics team, Anna will examine how structural features of the US economic system disproportionately burden women of color—an issue at the intersection of race, gender, and the economy.

In her first year, Anna will focus on highlighting her forthcoming book, The Double Tax: How Women of Color Are Overcharged and Underpaid (Penguin/Portfolio, September 2025). The book unpacks the hidden economic penalties facing women of color and presents bold, actionable solutions that local communities, policymakers, and global leaders can implement to alleviate these costs. As part of this work, Anna will participate in a public conversation with Chelsea Clinton at the 92nd Street Y in New York City on Wednesday, September 17, 2025. More details to come.

In 2026, Anna will expand her fellowship portfolio to support Roosevelt’s research and policy development on the racial and gender wealth gaps. Her work will explore transformative approaches to lowering costs for women of color across sectors like housing, childcare, and education—shaping a more equitable economic future for all.

“I am thrilled to have Anna join us as our newest graduate fellow,” said Hannah Groch-Begley, managing director of Roosevelt’s think tank. “Her research into how our economy stacks the deck against women of color will be critical to expanding Roosevelt’s work on economic power and inequality. By connecting policy to lived experience, Anna’s insights will challenge us to think bigger and bolder about how we create a more just and inclusive economy.”
